If you notice a candidate's application isn't appearing in your 'New' status, or it seems like you are receiving a lower volume of new applications, then follow these steps to identify whether responses to screening questions are causing this.

Why aren't new applicants appearing in the correct status?

If a candidate does not correctly answer a screening question on your requisition's screening form, the system automatically routes their application to 'Rejected' status instead of 'New.' Since the application isn't in 'New' status, it won't appear in reports or counts that track new applicants, even though it was received successfully.

Resolve inconsistent new applicant counts tied to screening question responses

Here is how to determine whether new applicants are being routed to a 'Rejected' status because of screening for responses:

  • Check the requisition's applicant list for candidates in a 'Rejected' status, not just 'New.'
  • Confirm whether the screening form questions match what you expect for the role. A mismatch or a strict required question can unintentionally reject qualified candidates.
  • If a candidate needs to be reconsidered, they can reapply and correctly answer the screening questions, or a recruiter can manually move their existing application to the correct status.

Moving forward, review your screening form periodically to make sure required questions and knockout automation are configured as intended for each requisition. For more information on configuring screening forms, refer to our help article on pre-screening forms.
